SHIELD OF FAITH
$145 one-day class
Who said burnt and crispy was a bad thing?  Not when you’re torch firing white enamel! Yes, this pendant is white enamel!  But before we get to the pendant, you’ll learn the immersion process of torch-fired enameling. Then we’ll move on to discussing which metals can be enameled, why some brass works and others do not, what torches to use, which gas is preferable, how to develop color by layering transparent enamels and much more. Finally, we’ll overfire enamel for special effect and hammer out a beat with our riveting hammer.
All students will be emailed a comprehensive 6-page Painting with Fire tutorial prior to the workshop. Following the workshop, you’ll find technical support at www.paintingwithfire.ning.com where you’ll meet friendly members excited about torch firing. Why don’t you join us at the “ning” while you await the workshop!

Eco-Printed Fabrics and Ribbon
$145 one-day class

Fabric pieces are laid on the table, littered with fallen leaves, bygone rose petals, neglected rusty relics of iron and copper, perhaps sprinkled with tea or marigolds.  Bundles of nature are wrapped, bound, and steamed then left to transcend and create magic.
We will experiment with a variety of flora (I.e eucalyptus, roses) using different mordants (i.e. tannin, iron, copper) and different types of fabrics, ribbon, & dollies.
When you leave class at the end of the day you will have a nice pile of dye printed fabrics to use in all types of mixed media projects ~ books, jewelry, clothing adornments, fabric flowers, whatever your imagination conjures up!
You must be prepared to smell the heady aroma of eucalyptus and onion skins steaming and be open to the surprise transformation of the dye process.  You can’t plan what will happen but that’s part of why this process is so intriguing to me, that and the fact it’s all natural, available, and easy.
KIT FEE - $20 – payable to instructor at class time and includes:
all fabrics, ribbon, doilies
STUDENT SUPPLY LIST
Protective gloves and aprons (I will provide disposable plastic aprons/gloves)
Scissors
Bring extra fabrics, doilies, ribbon you have that are natural fibers you may want

POP ROCKS
$145 one-day class
The name of this piece is only the beginning of a day of fun and discovery!  You’ll start by learning the immersion process of torch-fired enameling.  It’s fast, safe, fun and patented! We’ll forge our pendant from scrap copper, distress it, enamel it in a combination of opaque, transparent and coarse enamels.  Next we’ll form the copper jump rings from 12-gauge copper.  You’ll use the Jump Ring Jig, a nifty tool that will allow you to cut jump rings without fear of cutting yourself!  Always a good thing! After soldering the jump rings, I’ll share how to enamel brass for glorious transparent color!  “Pop Rocks” is a great workshop that covers some very useful skill areas.

Botanical and Rust Dye Printed Scarf
$145 one-day class
I took my inspiration from India Flint’s book titled “Eco Colour” about her journey using plants as dyes to print and color fabric.
I modified this process so it can be done in a day.  Fabric pieces are laid on the table, littered with fallen leaves, bygone rose petals, neglected rusty relics of iron and copper, perhaps sprinkled with tea or marigolds.  Bundles of nature are wrapped, bound, and steamed causing the natural dye properties to leach into the fabric and create prints and color.
We will experiment with a variety of flora (i.e eucalyptus, roses) using different mordants (i.e. tannin, iron, copper) and different types of silk and cottons (i.e habotai, chiffon), to print color onto fabrics.  After experimenting on smaller pieces of fabrics you will then dye a scarf length of silk noil fabric to create a scarf.  The scarf edges can be hemmed by hand or machine and other elements of adornment attached i.e. vintage lace, buttons, beads, etc.
You must be prepared to smell the heady aroma of eucalyptus steaming and be open to the surprise transformation of the dye process.  You can’t plan what will happen but that’s part of why this process is so intriguing to me, that and the fact it’s all natural, available, and easy.  Next time you’re walking down that country road you’ll have a flower press in hand to collect nature’s bounty to use in this technique.
KIT FEE - $25 – payable to instructor at class time and includes:
all fabrics and scarf blank

PWF TEACHER CERTIFICATION WORKSHOP
$145 one-day class
On June 25, 2013, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted the bead pulling station, and the immersion process of enameling associated with it, a Utility Patent (#8,470,399).  As a result, Painting with Fire Studio has embarked on the Teacher Certification and Licensing Program to help fill the demand for Painting with Fire Workshops. We simply cannot keep up with the requests for workshops. Rather than to decline these opportunities, we want to refer them to you.
The Certification Program is a two-day process, which can be fulfilled by taking either the Shield of Faith Workshop OR the Pop Rocks Workshop AND the Painting with Fire Teacher Certification Class.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to work with P-1 overglaze enamel; learn what brass is suitable for enameling, why, and how to get gorgeous transparent color; how to fire ceramic decals onto enamel pendants; how to work with liquid enamels.  We’ll also cover the business aspects of teaching, including what to look for in a teaching facility, how to structure your class, safety and troubleshooting issues, liability, etc.
At the end of the day, if you decide that you want to teach, payment of a $250 Licensing Fee completes the licensing process.  You’ll immediately begin to enjoy a 20% discount on enameling supplies, promotion of your workshops on our website, technical support from PWF Staff, expedited treatment of orders and much more.  You’ll quickly experience your return on investment through teaching fees and enamel sales.
For more information about the Certification Program, please email pwfstudio@me.com

reconstructed, Upcycled and Wearable!
$145 one-day class
I am so excited to have come up with simple and easy ways of reconstructing button down shirts that anyone interested in clothing design can accomplish!  Really!
Each designer will take 3-5 shirts and reconstruct them into a fun and arty new one.  Basic sewing skills are helpful but not necessary (if not experienced be prepared to learn basic sewing machine operation or you can hand stitch). I will show various samples and designs of how to recreate your garment. Pattern ideas and information will be given to each student about how to cut your shirt so it becomes a style that fits and flatters each individual.   This is an exercise to give you freedom to cut existing garments and confidence that you can reconstruct unloved clothing.
Once the basic shirt is completed it will be a wearable garment but it can be further embellished by adding pockets, lace, doilies, buttons, embroidery, whatever you envision.  I will give each student individual time and help with designing and give ideas for embellishments
KIT FEE - optional fee if you need extra items - Many shirts to choose from if needed at $4 per shirt (my cost). Optional embellishment kits which will include lace, buttons, etc. for a small fee. Some free things available too! – payable to instructor at class time and includes:

Think about shirt weight and how it will drape as a skirt. I prefer to use natural fibers. We will cut the coordinating shirts to use parts of to add onto the base shirt so don’t have the shirt fabrics too heavy for the base shirt, i.e. you wouldn’t want to add denim to a silk top.
OPTIONAL

laces
trims
flounces

JESSICA JORDAN
THE ALL NEW
3-RING CIRCUS
$435 three-day class
Richard Salley and Jessica Jordan team up to bring you an intensive 3-day workshop that focuses entirely on the process of ring making. In this series of workshops we will be presenting how to make 3 rings, 3 different ways in 3 days. Whether this will be your first foray into ring making or you want to expand your ring making knowledge, you will leave the workshop with newly acquired skills that will launch you into a new level of jewelry making.
Day 1
The Hollow Donut Ring – Begin your Circus experience with a basic design that is determined to get you geared up and primed for the other types of rings you will learn to

make. Although simple in concept, the Hollow Donut Ring has unlimited design possibilities...mix metal, add stones, create patterns and textures to name a few options. On Day 1 you will learn how to properly size a ring for any given gauge of metal, how to resize a ring once it has been made, and how to finish your piece in a polished, professional way.
Day 2
The Prong-Set Ring – Continue your Circus experience on Day 2 by creating a sterling silver prong-set ring. Not every stone fits nicely into a conventional bezel and a prong setting
offers options that usual bezels can't offer. We will also discuss various ring shank possibilities. Learning both how to create a prong setting and securely set a stone are two skills that can easily be applied to an infinite number of ring design possibilities. A valuable addition to your jewelry-making arsenal!
Day 3
The Stone-On-Stone Ring – The grand finale! End your circus stint by stacking stones! Learn another way to add interest and intrigue to your rings. Everyone will want to know how you manage to secure one stone on top of another. On Day 3 the mystery will be revealed and you will acquire a skill that will blow the lid off the design possibility big top! From here, the sky is the limit!

    1. Hi Brigitte! I’m glad you like the lineup of instructors at Art Retreat at The Prairie - Fall 2014!!! I’m really pleased with the instructors and the projects they are teaching. As a matter of fact, I’m trying to figure out a way of taking classes at my own retreat this time! But, I am going to have the same difficulty as my students…figuring out which classes to take! I really would love to take them all!
